The New Mantra

April 27th, 2004
…Lucas works in mysterious ways. Though his actions may seem baffling and arbitrary at times, we must accept that it is all according to his divine providence. For who are we mortals to question him? He is incapable of error, except when he made the Original Trilogy, but he is fortunately correcting that mistake now.

There is no Original Trilogy, there is the Special Edition.

There is no wooden acting, there is “stylized performance.”

There are no continuity errors, there are “certain points of view.”

There are no plot holes, there are “unsolved mysteries.”

There is no greed, there is the Lucas.

Another “let’s rally around pole, boys!” thread bemoaning the (deserved) mauling of AOTC. And, again, SHB-JR is making the most sense:

I’m addressing this to the general thread, not just the post creator, but he’s supported by alot of you so you are him in effect.:

What a bunch of….! You can’t create a supposed ‘backlash of AOTC’, there wasn’t one !
Most of the mainstream world sat with their fingers crossed that it wouldn’t be as bad as TPM and when it proved to be better, sighed and gave it middle of the road to good reviews.

So lets stop with the ‘pity party’. Oh poor misunderstood AOTC !
And quit the ‘Rally round ye defenders of the PT’ spiel too. Really, there are defense threads for that kind of gushing !

AOTC wasn’t TPM, it doesn’t stir the same feelings of distaste in some that TPM does.
AOTC was so much better than TPM and alot of so called bashers (myself among them) say so ! AOTC wasn’t perfect and had alot of flaws, but it isn’t disliked the same way. People don’t like it because either it just isn’t as good as the OT, or because they dislike the direction of the PT as a whole.

And on the flip side, alot of people who LOVE TPM, can’t stand AOTC or are lukewarm at best. Surely if they as a default liked TPM then they wanted to like AOTC ? And if that is true, surely OT fans wanted to like it too ? The fact some were unable to like it doesn’t speak of the fans neccesarily but of the film ?

So all you’re claims about people not wanting to like this movie fall quite flat, given that some TPM fans don’t like it. And some OT fans don’t like it- all have a default agenda to LIKE it !

AOTC like TPM, like ANH, like ESB, like ROTJ is LIKED or DISLIKED by it’s own merits, or lack thereof.

Enough with the assuming other fans minds ! Enough with making martyers of yourselves for liking a movie that others don’t like. Makes you feel nice and rightous, but it’s nonsense.

Enough with the ‘Amen brother!’ And building yourselves into a frenzy over ‘defending’ your OPINION. Not SW, just your own opinion that can’t bear others thinking differently.

Your opinion and your pride mean more than SW with some people. Otherwise you’d able able to discuss things without making assumptions about the mind set and agenda of fans just like you !

Enough with the silly Pseudo Psycho Babble about ‘our wanting to dislike it before we’d even seen it’ or havinng too many assumptions about what SW we wanted.

Enough of the stupid assumption that if you like a particular SW movie then you’re ok, but if you don’t it’s clearly because you have ‘an agenda’ not to like it, or are sub conciously ‘affected’ or ‘not child like enough’ or ’stupid’ or ‘disloyal’ or ‘not SW fans.’

Enough with the whining.

Like someone above said we’re SW fans, and if we don’t like a particular part of the saga, we generally don’t because we can see valid reasons not to. As valid as anyones reasons to see it as the next coming.

So if you wanna talk and discuss why AOTC is great then fine, but don’t start with something as infuriating as ‘ AOTC had a backlash’ and give rise to all this ridiculous ‘ we don’t have to be ashamed nonsense !’

Stuff like this is what has divided SW fans into ‘bashers’ and ‘gushers’.

We’re all just fans, and if some fans only like the PT then fine, if some only like the OT, then fine. If they like a mix, then fine. Agree to disagree without insulting even in a side line way, or without the Yee Haw’ mentality of a few post above. Of course we’re all SW fans, or we wouldn’t be here. even if we dislike some SW films or aspects !
Sure you can declare your love for AOTC,and some may agree or disagree.

But enough of the ‘poor persecuted us’ from PT fans ! You’re more likely to get persecuted if you say anything bad or express a reservation about a PT film !
One is made to be more ‘ashamed’ for deciding that they want to use their own judgement- as they do with any work of art- than if they love SW unreservedly. And OT bashing season is always open !! Why ?!

It’s a pity that one has to go to a ‘Bashers’ thread to even express an honest negative opinion about a SW film, even a slight one. And I’m not taking about saying SW is crap, I’m talking about even saying you don’t like certain aspects of a film and why. Do it anywhere else and ‘whoosh!, gusher/basher war ? Talk about Ghettoisation’!
It’s a shame !

Case in point : Would a thread entitled ‘ The lack of validity in AOTC’ survive even five mins ! Even if it was based on reasoned, honest argument it would be swamped by attacks and quickly closed.

Not saying that we should tolarate baseless attacks and trolling but all the people so quick to cry about being made ‘ashamed’ should think twice. Try to even say ‘boo’ about a PT film in most of the forums and you’re more likely to get jumped on ! With both feet !

As for being made to be ashamed:
if you’re feeling ashamed, thats your problem not mine. I’m not ashamed of the SW films I love, not am I ashamed of disliking some. Or rather one really.

Pecercution complex away please, you don’t need it.

And at the end of the day, after all the above:

I like AOTC. I think it could be better, I see the problems and flaws, but I like it.

So close the thread already, it’s just a flash point for ‘pointless bickering’, mark my words

SHB JR

For the record, this thread was dug up yesterday. roll

Okay, there’s this new pick on Hyperspace that people are currently losing their minds over. (And I do mean, losing their minds. ) I can’t see the pic because I haven’t wasted my money subscribing to it, but there is said to be an appearance of an artifact that was seen in TPM but was absent in AOTC. The japor snippet. My God, I’ve never seen such exercise over a thing since the One Ring fell into Frodo Baggins’ hands. “Oh, how sweet, how romantic!” How vomit-enducing! Is this now supposed to make me care about two people who, over two movies, have given me zero reasons to care about them? I don’t think so. I don’t get excited about objects. It’s extremely disconcerting what things GL thinks are worthy of being adhered to continuity-wise and what isn’t.
